Introduction: This study examined recognition of words with emotional content in individuals with autism spectrum disorder compared to typically developing peers.
Method: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (n=20) and typically developing youth (n=20) aged 8.5 to 17.5 years performed an emotional valence judgment task using neutral and emotional words. Reaction time and accuracy of responses were recorded.
Results: A repeated measures analysis of variance showed that: accuracy of responses was affected by emotional content (p=0.000), but the interaction of group and emotion was not significant. Positive words were associated with a higher number of correct responses than negative and neutral words. Reaction time was not affected by emotion (p=0.876), and no difference was observed between groups.
Conclusion: Participants recognized positive words more accurately than negative and neutral words, which may be due to the ease of understanding positive emotion and its effects on increasing focus and cognitive and social resources. No differences were observed between the groups in accuracy and reaction time.
