Introduction: Adolescents who are victims of bullying experience psychological problems, therefore, therapeutic interventions to improve these consequences should be effective. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on assertiveness and self- esteem in adolescent girls who are victims of bullying.
Methods: The research method was a experimental with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up (3 month) with a control group. The statistical population of this study consisted of adolescent girls who were victims of bullying in Kermanshah city. The statistical sample included 32 adolescent girls who were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The Adolescent Bullying Scale (Shaw et al., 2013), Assertiveness Scale (Shrink, 1980), and Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using mixed analysis of variance.
Results: The results showed that MBCT was effective in increasing the assertiveness and self-esteem scores of adolescent girls who were victims of bullying, and the persistence of the therapy effect was significant in both variables.
Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that MBCT, by enhancing moment-to-moment awareness, promoting emotional acceptance, and reducing self-criticism, contributes to improving assertiveness and self-esteem in adolescent girls. Therefore, using this approach in school-based interventions and counseling centers can be an effective strategy for enhancing the mental health of adolescents affected by bullying.
