Concepts such as reasoning, inference and logical thinking and their relationship with language and culture are among controversial issues in social and psychological sciences. In the last decades, cognitive scientists have played a significant role in elucidation of fundamental mechanisms involved in these higher cognitive functions. In this article, authors have reviewed the definitions and theories for inference and reasoning as well an the methods and instruments used for the assessment of these abilities. They have also explored the relationship of these functions with culture and language.
