Abstract:   (2183 Views)
Objective: This study was designed to measure the frequency of history of physical and sexual abuse among psychiatric inpatients.
Method: Using an assault questionnaire and personal interview, detailed histories of physical and sexual abuse were obtained from 100 psychiatric inpatients (50 males, 50 females) who were discharged during a three month period. The method of sampling was convenience sampling.
Results: Sixty one percent of the patients (56% of men and 70% of women) had experienced physical and/or sexual abuse. The difference of the frequency of sexual abuse between men and women was significant.
Conclusion: Regarding the high frequency of assault history among psychiatric patients and its important effects on mental health as well as doctor patient relationship, routine inquiry about patients' assault history is recommended.
