Introduction: Today, it is accepted that cerebral palsy is much more than a "postural and movement disorder" and is often associated with a wide range of disorders, including cognitive, communicational, and sensory-perceptual disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) on the cognitive functions of children with cerebral palsy.
Methods: The present study is a quasi-experimental controlled trial. The participants were children with cerebral palsy aged 7 to 18 years, and 36 participants were randomly placed in two control and experimental groups (each group of 18 subjects), The experimental group received 10 sessions of 20-minute tDCS, and the control group remained on the waiting list with receiving the routine interventions. During the intervention period and until the end of that, the data of 8 people were excluded from the analysis due to their unwillingness to continue cooperating. Thus the data of 28 people were analyzed. The evaluations were done by using the parent's form of the Brief Executive Functions Questionnaire (BRIEF).
Results: The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that the two groups did not differ significantly in sub-components except in the organization(p ≤ 0/05).
Conclusion: Recent studies indicate that tDCS can be a promising additional tool in the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. However, the exact mechanisms of action still require further investigation, particularly because there are not enough studies focusing on the effects of tDCS on the executive cognitive functions in these children. More research is needed in this area.
