Introduction: Stress has always been one of the challenges in medical education, especially during internship periods, and identifying psychological resources that act as protective factors for students is a concern of mental health professionals. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction training on stress symptoms and psychological capital of medical students.
Methods: The present study was conducted using a semi-experimental design with a control group, along with pre-test and post-test assessments. The statistical population consisted of all medical interns at the Islamic Azad University of Tonekabon in 1401-1402. Participants were selected using non-probabilistic volunteer sampling and random assignment into two groups: experimental (15 participants) and control (15 participants). The experimental group received mindfulness-based stress reduction training in 8 sessions of 120 minutes each, while the control group remained on the waiting list. Data were collected using the DASS (1995) and Psychological Capital Questionnaire (2007). Multivariate analysis of covariance was employed for data analysis using SPSS software.
Results: The results indicated a significant difference between the experimental group, who underwent mindfulness-based stress reduction training, and the control group, who received no training, in terms of reducing stress symptoms and increasing psychological capital at the 0.01 level.
Conclusion: This program effectively reduced stress symptoms while boosting the psychological capital of medical interns. This research holds significance not only for improving mental and physical health but also for practical applications in reducing stress and enhancing performance in medical professions. These findings offer guidance for developing similar educational programs across healthcare fields, aiming for improved service quality and stress reduction.
