Abstract:
introduction: Self-handicapping is of the factors involved in academic achievement and also is of less known strategies used to explain failure. The present study was carried out by the purpose of predicting academic self-handicapping based on metacognitive beliefs, fear of negative appraisal and perfectionism regarding the mediating role of goal orientation in second period high school students of Urmia city.
Method: The methodology of this study was descriptive-correlational that was done through structural equation pattern. The statistical population of this research included all the second period high school students in Urmia among them 827 people were selected by randomized cluster sampling method (413 people for fit of the main model and 414 people for measurement model). The instruments of data collection included the followings: questionnaire of metacognitive, Hewitt & Flettchr('39')s perfectionism questionnaire, academic self-handicapping, goal orientation scale. In order to examine data, structural equation method and especially the method of Bootstrapping was used.
Results: The results of structural equation analysis indicated that the presented structural equation has good fit and all the indices have pleasant fit and good fit index was 0.933.
Conclusion: Regarding the findings it was concluded that the model of metacognitive beliefs, fear of negative appraisal and perfectionism predict academic self-handicapping by the mediating role of goal orientation.
