Method: Using an assault questionnaire and personal interview, detailed histories of physical and sexual abuse were obtained from 100 psychiatric inpatients (50 males, 50 females) who were discharged during a three month period. The method of sampling was convenience sampling. Results: Sixty one percent of the patients (56% of men and 70% of women) had experienced physical and/or sexual abuse. The difference of the frequency of sexual abuse between men and women was significant.
